Ruminations of a Grumpy Shepherd

Ruminations of a Grumpy Shepherd recounts Dick and Gretchen Regnery’s experiences from over 20 years of raising sheep in Door County in northeast Wisconsin. In their late 30’s, they abandoned their urban life to buy and rehabilitate an old dairy farm. Their flock of white and naturally colored Corriedale sheep produces specialized wool for use in handspinning. Along with insights on raising and caring for sheep and producing quality wool, the book introduces many of the individual members of the flock. Certain flock members also contribute their own essays in order to assure that a “balanced” perspective is maintained. Join us for tales ranging from trolls and phobias to artificial insemination to a journey to the end of the earth.

There are two ways to purchase a copy of Ruminations of a Grumpy Shepherd.

YARN

The fleeces that we sell for hand spinning is the wool under the jackets that our Corriedale sheep wear year around. In addition to that wool, each sheep has wool that cannot be covered by the jackets, but which is still quite suitable for spinning. We save this wool and have it professionally washed, carded and spun for us. We call this “mill-spun” yarn. In addition we occasionally produce yarn which is hand-spun by Gretchen.

Our yarn is spun for us at Blackberry Ridge Woolen Mill in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin. All of the yarn is sport weight and comes in skeins of approximately 4 ounces each. There are about 350 yards in a 4 ounce skein. For our undyed, “mill-spun” yarn, we weigh each skein and price it individually. The cost is $3.50/ounce for our natural colors and white which is about $14.00/skein. The naturally dyed yarns are all priced at $28.00/skein, regardless of exact weight.

We usually have our Corriedale “mill-spun” yarn available in four natural colors and white. We also have naturally dyed yarn in a mutlitude of colors. Gretchen dyes the yarn using plants, mushrooms, and other naturally occuring dye materials.

The five natural colors currently available are shown below. (Keep in mind that the colors shown on your monitor will not exactly match the yarn colors in real life.)

1. Chocolate Chip Brown
2. Milk Chocolate Brown
3. Dark Gray
4. Light Gray
5. White

Please note that each batch of “mill-spun” yarn can be slightly different from the next in terms of shade. We provide an identifying number for each batch sold if you need to purchase additional amounts of the exact same yarn.

Naturally dyed yarn is available only at the Art Gallery in season and by  appointment at the farm in the off season. To whet your appetite here is a picture of some of the dyed yarns.

When the Art Gallery is open from mid-May through mid-October both mill-spun and hand-spun yarns are offered for sale in the Art Gallery. Our wonderful Corriedale “mill-spun” yarn is also available year around. It can be ordered directly from us and shipped to you. In season you can visit the Art Gallery and select yarn directly. Additionally, you can call us out of season at 920-743-1560 to make an appointment to see and choose your yarn.

To receive a sample of the white and four naturally colored yarns, send a $5.00 check made out to “Whitefish Bay Farm”, to 3831 Clark Lake Road, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235. (We cannot send samples of our naturally dyed yarns.)

ROVING

Roving is usually available in four natural colors and white. We sell roving by the ball, as it comes to us from our wool processor, Blackberry Ridge Woolen Mill. Roving balls may weigh anywhere from 2 to 4 ounces in size. We will try to get as close as possible to the number of ounces that you are requesting. Not all colors may be available at all times.

Our roving is priced at two levels. The higher priced roving is made from the individual fleece of a jacketted sheep. The lower priced roving is made as a blend of fleeces from several sheep and may include wool that was not under a jacket. The two costs are $4.00/ounce or $3.00/ounce.

Currently we have the following colors available:

1. Chocolate Chip Brown
2. Milk Chocolate Brown –  unavailable until mid-2017
3. Dark Gray
4. Light Gray
5. White – unavailable until mid-2017

Please note: Your total cost will also include a charge for shipping and handling, plus sales tax, if you are a Wisconsin resident. You will receive an itemized receipt and your credit card receipt with your shipment.
